From last year’s discovery that hackers had accessed the sensitive records of 10.5 million Excellus BlueCross BlueShield customers and vendors, to leaked personal information and nude images of celebrities like Leslie Jones, it’s no secret that much of the software we use these days contains security flaws that criminals can exploit.But how do those security flaws and vulnerabilities get there in the first place?What are the human as well as technological factors that lead to their creation?Those questions go to the heart of research conducted by Rochester Institute of Technology software engineering professor Andy Meneely via the university’s $2 million Center for Cybersecurity, which is now formally launching operations.“We’re often thinking about usability and not enough about abusability,” said Meneely.The center’s mission is to allow RIT faculty and students to find answers to questions like the ones Meneely is investigating, to create partnerships with industry and to promote cybersecurity education and training.Given the ever-increasing degree that computers and the internet play in our personal and professional lives, the creation of the center makes sense, said Matthew Wright, its recently installed director.
