Overall, I enjoyed the book. The novel "The Dogs of Winter" written by Kem Nunn and published in 1997 tells the story of four men who go on a adventure together to take photographs of them surfing in a hidden reef called heart attacks, which is said to be beautiful, wild and marvelous - but it's location isn't identified. It reminded me of a hybrid of a pair of movies from the 90's: Point Break and Thunder Heart. A passage: "It [the first wave of a set] was an unnerving spectacle, and a yet a thing to behold full of terror and fluid beauty.

His description ofThe word original is bandied about much too often in the fiction world, but The Dogs of Winter is nothing if not wholly unique and that is exactly what attracted me to it. Compared with Straw Dogs and Deliverance this excellently plotted and characterized tale of foolishness, revenge, and violence set in the surreal beauty of the unforgiving wilderness of Northern California and Southern Oregon also treads ground similar to Denis Johnson’s Already Dead though much less fuzzy and David Lynch like(but not by much, some spooky stuff is in this book).

Nunn's work with David Milch and the fact that Point Break was based, very loosely, on his first novel made me pick this up when I saw it at a Goodwill location. It is said to cross sacred ceremonial Indian land, populated by hostile Indians, amidst shark infested seas, where monster waves break a little distance from the shore. Also, the residents of the reservation are eager for confrontation, and murderously outsized cold-water waves (known to surfers as ""dogs of winter"") pound the shoreline. Let’s be honest: It’s a lot of pressure to pick your book club’s next read.

The descriptions of the water are as exceptional as they are true to life. Together, these three, and assorted Indians, witches, and tribal officials enact with considerable suspense. The Dogs of Winter is a phrase generally reserved for huge waves generated by winter storms. His novels have been described as "surf-noir" for their dark themes, political overtones and surf settings.

Nunn seems to ask this question, focusing on fame, money, spirituality, revenge, and heroism showing them as faint comfort when it comes down. You get rain. The main character Drew Harmon lives the dream. He lives in Southern California, where he also writes screenplays for television and film. The characters were believable, the plot moved along, and the end was fitting. Start by marking “The Dogs of Winter” as Want to Read: In one of the blurbs on the paperback copy I read, a reviewer describes the writing as being a cross between Elmore Leonard and Cormac McCarthy. I expected it to be about the search for California’s biggest wave, but it was so much more than that. Be the first to ask a question about The Dogs of Winter

Objective coverage of surf community issues with gender and culture.

The wave rose first with great mass, like a hill, but this hill was made of liquid, in constant flux, and even as you watched it, it would change its form, turning itself to a long dark wall as the face went vertical and then beyond vertical as the creat began to feather and finally to pitch forward, to strike the water far out in front of the face--thus creating the vaunted green room of surfing myth--the place to be if you were to be there at all, on a board, at the eye of the storm, encompassed by the sound and the fury, bone dry in a place no one had ever been, or would be again, because when the wave was gone the place was gone too and would only exist in memory." Some reviewers seem to want to classify it as literary, comparing it to Robert Stone or even Cormac McCarthy, but that's a reach.

An extraordinary book!I love surfing, I love crime novels.

He is the author of five novels, including his seminal surf novel Tapping the Source.

The word original is bandied about much too often in the fiction world, but The Dogs of Winter is nothing if not wholly unique and that is exactly what attracted me to it. Evocative imagery. The story has a sense of magic surrounding it, not in a fantasy sense, but in simple awe of the world that has been created. The small towns across the Mojave Desert in I love the settings in Kem Nunn’s novels.

The Dogs of Winter is a portrait of two men and an appealing yet troubled young woman set against an unforgettable background of stark and violent beauty.Kem Nunn writes extraordinary and complex California Noir set in the world of surfing, reminscent of the movie, Point Break. Highly recommend it, especially if you, like myself, read mysteries as much for the travelog as the mystery.

Lovely book and harrowing too.
