Don't Bend Ascend a major work on the scale of Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antenna to Heaven.

They are proficient musicians with good ideas always trying to push the envelope.

When listening to their music, I'm not necessarily thinking about the downtrodden transcending their place in the capitalist hierarchy or the end of the world; I'm thinking about the "We Drift Like Worried Fire" is the flip-side of "Mladic", both literally and figuratively.

Like the 2002 album, the new one is entirely instrumental, without the prominent vocal samples that were an integral part of the sound of their earlier recordings. Drowned in Sound's Andrzej Lukowski said that the release is "a modestly magnificent record that entirely validates" the band reforming.

That said, given the discipline and experimentation in the short pieces, and in the creative imagination displayed in rearranging the longer ones to accommodate a larger band, 'Allelujah!

I enjoy this album as I have past GYBE releases. It allows them to find magnificence in destruction and build an aesthetic out of decay and loss.

I particularly love this album although many of the Godspeed spin-off bands are equally good.

This is a Godspeed record through and through.

Don't Bend Ascend proves, that GY!BE still has plenty of captivating things to say. rewards immersive, though somewhat uncritical, listening: a glorious hymn to the visceral and transformative power of sound. "Worried Fire" is also the kind of song that Godspeed's early peers (In one of the many inserts that came with the vinyl version of that debut, there's a "Worried Fire" is music that makes you forget about politics and the machinations of the record business and the bullshit of internet chatter and brings you into singularity with the sheer beauty of their sound, music to make you cry with a smile on your face. The material was mostly written back in the 2002-2003 timeframe, so it's not surprising that there is strong continuity. The first track, "Mladic", contains so much musical detail you cannot properly appreciate it without sitting and listening to the whole thing from start to finish. It's good to have them back in top form. It hasn't blown me away like it seems to have with other people, but I do agree that GYBE are pretty much head and shoulders above all others in the sweeping, cinematic post-rock category. Definitely most fun to listen to.
