With her “Silk Mosaics,” however, she freed herself to express something more personal. Dress fabrics were an important part of her design practice in the early post-war period. It is a rare accomplishment for an industrial designer to so successfully capture the spirit of the age that their designs end up not only on consumer products, but also being exhibited in art galleries and museums. She gave up the idea of mass production and instead began hand-stitching silk wall hangings—her “Silk Mosaics.” Sometimes figurative and other times purely abstract, these works convey a personal visual language more distinctive than anything Day had designed before. Current licencees of Lucienne Day's designs include Classic Textiles (furnishing fabrics originally produced by Heal Fabrics), twentytwentyone (tea towels originally produced by Thomas Somerset), John Lewis (dress and furnishing fabrics originally produced by Cavendish Textiles), Bookroom Art Press (prints originally produced as tea towels), 1882 Ltd (ceramic 'flower bricks' originally produced by Bristol Pottery) and Alternative Flooring (carpets originally produced by Wilton Royal). The Foundation celebrated Lucienne Day's centenary year in 2017 by co-ordinating a nationwide programme of events highlighting different aspects of her career. After moving to 49 Cheyne Walk in Chelsea in 1952, Lucienne and Robin Day transformed the interiors of this Victorian house into a model of ‘Contemporary’ design.
